Ashley - Flaming Gorge

Named by an Army Major on expedition in 1869 for its startling red cliffs, the Flaming Gorge is one of the most spectacular scenic areas in the Rocky Mountains. The rich red and gold hues of Ashley's amazing geologic formations are contrasted by the deep greens of the river, reservoir, and vegetation. Once home to dinosaurs, the gorge is now famous for its monster fish! World record lake, brown, and rainbow trout have all been caught in the Flaming Gorge Reservoir. The dam at the reservoir offers guided tours every hour, explaining the working of the hydroelectric plant and history of the area. Tourists come from all over the country to enjoy the spectacular views, visit the Fenley Dinosaur Area, and play in the reservoir. Motor boating, sailing, swimming, windsurfing, water skiing, and scuba diving are among the reservoir's popular recreation activities (but nothing beats the fishing!).

Firefighters Memorial Campground is located about 5 miles from Dutch John, or 37 miles from Vernal. To get there from Vernal, take Highway 191 north 36 miles, then go right at the split. The campground is on your right about a mile up the road. Set in a wooded area near the Green River, this campground has 94 single sites. There is a small trail within the campground leading down to a beautiful overlook where a memorial to firefighters who died fighting wildfires in the area is located. Campers come to swim, boat, fish, hike, sail, scuba dive, and enjoy the beautiful views of the reservoir.

Amenities include flush toilets, drinking water, paved roads, tent pads, fire rings, and picnic tables. Firewood is sold on site.

Fees are $15 /night for a single site, and $250 /month for extended stay if a site is available. Sites are limited to 2 vehicles and 10 persons, which are included in these fees.

Greendale Family Campground and Greendale Group Campground are only 1 mile from Firefighters. The Family Campground has 8 single sites, and the Group Campground has 2 group sites.

Amenities include vault toilets, drinking water, paved roads, tent pads, fire rings, and picnic tables.

Fees are $15 /night for a single site, and $65 /night for a group site. Single sites have a maximum of 10 people and 2 vehicles. Group sites have a maximum of 40 people.

Cedar Springs Campground is located about 5 miles from Dutch John at an elevation of 6100 feet. To get there from Vernal, take Highway 191 north 36 miles and go right at the split. Follow it about 3 miles and take a left onto Forest Rd 183. Follow this road down near the reservoir. The campground is on your left.

Set in a rolling, wooded area, this campground has 16 single and 3 double campsites. Campers come here to fish and boat.

Amenities include a boat launch, fish cleaning station, vault toilets, paved roads, drinking water, tent pads, fire rings, and picnic tables. Firewood is sold on site.

Fees are $15 /night for a single site, and $30 /night for a double site. There is a maximum of 2 vehicles and 10 people at a single site, or 4 vehicles and 20 people at a double site. Additional vehicles and/or persons will require the rental of an additional site.

Dripping Springs Campground is located 3 miles from Dutch John at an elevation of 6000 feet. To get there from Vernal, take Highway 191 north 36 miles until it splits. Go right at the split, and continue following Highway 191 for several miles. You will cross the dam. Turn right at FS Road 075, and follow it to the campground. The campground will be on your right hand side.

Set in wooded, rolling terrain near the Flaming Gorge Reservoir, this campground has 19 single sites, 2 double sites, and 4 group sites. Group sites 3 & 4 will accommodate up to 40 people. Group sites 1 & 2 will accommodate up to 60 people. Campers come here to fish, hike or float down the green river. This campground sustained major fire damage and was re-built in 2002. Those using facilities outside the campground will need to purchase a Rec Fee Demo Pass from camp hosts, local businesses, or the Forest Service. The campground is open year round.

Fees are $15 for a single site with up to 2 vehicles, $30 for a double site with up to 4 vehicles, and $75 for a group site. There is a maximum of 10 people at a single site, or 20 people at a double site. Additional vehicles and/or people will require the rental of an additional site. Check out time is 1 p.m.

Amenities at the family campground include paved roads, drinking water, flush toilets, tent pads, picnic tables with fly tie clamps, and fire rings with attached grills. Eight handicap accessible sites are available. Firewood is sold on site.

For all Group sites, consider each RV equal to 2 vehicles. There is no additional parking available. Towed vehicles must be included in the vehicle count.

Amenities at Group Site 1 include 6 tent pads, a serving table, 3 long dining tables, 2 fire ring grills, 1 large barbecue grill, and a 6' diameter fire ring. This site holds 12 vehicles or 6 RVs.

Amenities at Group site 2 include a large BBQ grill, fire ring, 7 tables, 1 large tent pad. There is a 20 by 30 ft shade pavilion. Parking holds up to 14 vehicles or 7 RV's.

Amenities at Group Site 3 include a large BBQ grill, fire ring, 5 tables, and 1 large tent pad. There are surrounding areas to scatter additional tents. There is a 20 by 30 ft. shade pavilion. The parking area holds 8 vehicles or 4 RV's.

Deer Run Campground is located 5 miles from Dutch John at an elevation of 6100 feet. To get there from Vernal, take Highway 191 north 36 miles to the split. Go right, and follow the road about 3 miles to Forest Road 183. The campground is on the left hand side just a little bit down the road.

Set in rolling terrain within 1 mile of the Flaming Gorge Reservoir, this campground has 15 single sites and 4 double sites. All sites at this campground are rented on a first-come, first-serve basis. Campers come here to boat, fish, hike, water-ski, and swim. Those using facilities outside the campground will need to purchase a Rec Fee Demo Pass from camp hosts, local businesses, or the Forest Service.

Amenities include paved roads, drinking water, flush toilets, showers, tent pads, picnic tables, and fire rings with grills. There are a boat ramp and fish cleaning station at Cedar Springs, just down the road. Firewood is sold on site.

Fees are $17 /night for a single site with up to 2 vehicles and $34 /night for a double site with up to 4 vehicles. There is a $3 shower fee.

Arch Dam Campground is located 45 miles north of Vernal on US Highway 191. To get there, take Hwy 191 north from Vernal 36 miles to the split. Go right, and continue following 191 another few miles to the campground. Arch Dam will be on the right side of the road. Arch Dam has 3 group campsites.

Amenities include drinking water, vault toilets, and fire rings.

Group site 1 will hold up to 60 people and 15 vehicles or 7 RV's. Group sites 2 & 3 will hold up to 75 people and 20 vehicles or 10 RV's.

Fees are $65 /night.

Dutch John Draw Campground is located about 47 miles north of Vernal off of US Hwy 191. From Vernal, take 191 36 miles north to the split. Go right, and continue on this branch of 191 about 10 miles. About 2 miles after the dam, turn west (left) on Forest Service Road 695 and drive for about 1 mile to the campground. Dutch John Draw is 1 mile south of Dutch John, Utah, so if you get there, you've gone too far.

Set in a pinion pine forest near the shore of the Flaming Gorge Reservoir, this campground has 1 group campsite that will hold up to 40 people and 10 vehicles. Those desiring to use facilities outside the campground will need to purchase a Rec Area Pass from camp hosts, local businesses, visitors center, or the Forest Service.

Amenities include 10 tables, a barbeque, a vault toilet, and a large cabaņa.

Fees are $75 /night. After 40 people, $1 /person will be collected at the campground.

Antelope Flat Campground is located 12 miles from Dutch John at an elevation of 6060 feet. To get there from Vernal, take US Hwy 191 36 miles north to the split. Turn right and follow this branch of 191 another 18 miles. You will pass the dam and the city of Dutch John. Eight miles north of Dutch John, turn west on Forest Road 145, and follow it for for 4 miles. Follow the signs from there to the campground.

Set in sagebrush covered hills on the Flaming Gorge Reservoir, this campground has 46 single sites and 4 extended stay single sites. Campers come to fish, boat, swim, hike, and enjoy the beautiful views and beach area. Those desiring to use facilities outside the campground will need to purchase a Rec Area Pass from camp hosts, local businesses, visitors center, or the Forest Service.

Amenities include paved roads, drinking water, flush toilets, a boat ramp, a beach (no lifeguard), a fish cleaning station, fire rings, and picnic tables. Firewood is available for purchase on site.

Fees are $14 /night for a single site with 2 vehicles or $250 /month for extended stay. Non-campers dump fee is $4.

Lodgepole Campground is located 26 miles north of Vernal at an elevation of 8000 feet. To get there, take US Hwy 191 north 26 miles. The campground is on the east (right) side of the highway. Just follow the signs.

Set in a lodgepole pine and aspen woods, the campground has 35 single sites. Campers come here to hike and fish. Those desiring to use facilities outside the campground will need to purchase a Rec Area Pass from camp hosts, local businesses, visitors center, or the Forest Service.

Amenities include paved roads, drinking water, a dump site at the campground entrance, picnic tables, flush toilets, and fire rings. Firewood is available for purchase on site.

Fees are $14 /night for a single site, $5 for picnicking or day use, and there is a $4 dump fee for non-campers.

Red Springs Campground is located just across the highway from Lodgepole. To get there from Vernal, take US Hwy 191 north 26 miles. The campground is on the west (left) side of the road. Just follow the signs.

Mustang Ridge Campground is located 7 miles from Dutch John at an altitude of 6300 feet. To get there from Vernal, take US Hwy 191 36 miles north until it splits. Go right at the split and follow this branch of 191 another 15 miles. You will pass the dam and the city of Dutch John. Three miles north of Dutch John, turn west (left) on Forest Road 184, and follow it for approximately 2 miles. Follow the signs from there to the campground.

Set in a pinion pine and juniper forest on Flaming Gorge Reservoir, this campground has 72 single sites and 4 single extended stay sites. Campers come here to fish, hike, boat, water-ski, and enjoy the beach area. Those desiring to use facilities outside the campground will need to purchase a Rec Area Pass from camp hosts, local businesses, visitors center, or the Forest Service.

Amenities include paved roads, drinking water, flush toilets, showers, a boat launch, a swimming beach (no lifeguard), picnic tables, and fire rings.

Jarvies Boat-in Campground is located on the Flaming Gorge Reservoir, a 20 minute boat ride from Cedar Springs Marina.

Located in a juniper and pinion pine forest on the shores of the Flaming Gorge reservoir, this campground has 8 single sites and 1 group site. Access to this campground is by boat only. The closest boat ramps are Cedar Springs and Mustang Ridge, approximately 4 miles away. There are 7 single-family sites, 2 of which can be reserved. Those desiring to use facilities outside the campground will need to purchase a Rec Area Pass from local businesses, visitors center, or the Forest Service.

Each single-family site has a cabana, picnic table, tent pad, and fire ring. The campground area offers a vault restroom and gravel trails between campsites and a dock system with limited space.

The group site consists of a large pavilion, 2 fire rings, 2 grills, 6 picnic tables, 3 tent pads, a restroom, and a private dock system.

Fees Are $16 /night for a single site, and $65 /night for the group site. Single sites have a maximum of 10 people. The group site has a maximum of 40 people. Boat space is limited.

Firehole Campground is located 24 miles from Rock Springs, Wyoming on the Flaming Gorge Reservoir. To get there from Rock Springs, take US Hwy 191 south 14 miles to Forest Route 106. Turn west (right) and follow that road another 10 miles to the campground.

Set in a desert area with olive trees, beautiful views of the reservoir and rock formations, this campground has 36 single campsites and 2 double campsites. Campsites at this facility are rented on a first-come-first-served basis. Campers come here to fish, swim, picnic, hike, boat, water ski, and enjoy the beauty and uniqueness of the area.

Amenities include a beach, day use area, and boat ramp nearby, paved roads, drinking water, flush toilets, showers, picnic tables, a transfer station, and fire rings.

Fees are $14 /night for a single site with 2 vehicles, $28 /night for a double site with 4 vehicles, and a $4 transfer station fee for non-campers.
