Ashley - Flaming Gorge
Named by an Army Major on expedition in 1869 for its startling
red cliffs, the Flaming Gorge is one of the most spectacular scenic areas in the Rocky Mountains. The rich
red and gold hues of Ashley's amazing geologic formations are contrasted by the deep greens of the river,
reservoir, and vegetation. Once home to dinosaurs, the gorge is now famous for its monster fish! World
record lake, brown, and rainbow trout have all been caught in the Flaming Gorge Reservoir. The dam at the
reservoir offers guided tours every hour, explaining the working of the hydroelectric plant and history of
the area. Tourists come from all over the country to enjoy the spectacular views, visit the Fenley Dinosaur
Area, and play in the reservoir. Motor boating, sailing, swimming, windsurfing, water skiing, and scuba
diving are among the reservoir's popular recreation activities (but nothing beats the fishing!). |
