Rio Grande - Del Norte

Located in South-central Colorado, the Rio Grande National Forest has a rich and interesting local history and culture. The area is home to ancient Native American ruins, remnants of the Spanish Conquistadors, and gold rush ghost towns. Ringed by the Sangre de Cristo (Christ's Blood) and San Juan Ranges, this cradle of the mountains is crossed by rapid rivers and dotted with beautiful lakes. Hikers, horseback riders, and mountain bikers will find numerous trails. Campers come from all over the country in appreciation of the rich natural beauty and intriguing history of this remote corner of our nation's forestlands.

American Land & Leisure runs seven different facilities at Del Norte.

Big Meadows Campground is located 13 miles south of South Fork at an altitude of 9500 ft. The campground is situated in a spruce forest near Big Meadows Lake Reservoir. Campers come here to fish, hike, and enjoy the shaded campsites and varied local wildlife. The two sets of hosts at this campground care for 54 single sites, a picnic area, boat ramp, and scenic overlook, as well as Snow Lake Campground (4 miles up the mountain). Water hookups are available. Hours are between 20 to 30 hours per week per couple. The campground is open from the end of May to the beginning of September.

Cross Creek Campground is located 7 miles south of Southfork at an elevation of 8800 feet. The campground is situated among aspen and spruce trees near grassy meadows, overlooking Beaver Reservoir. Campers come here to fish for trout in the lake and river and hike the Cross Creek and Big Tree trails, whose trailheads are adjacent to the campground. The campground has 13 campsites, and the hosts who live here also care for a picnic area and boat ramp. There is pressurized water available. Caring for this campground takes approximately 12 to 20 hours per week per couple. The campground is open from the end of May to the beginning of September.

Highway Springs Campground is located 5 miles from Southfork at an elevation of 8400 feet. The campground is situated in an open meadow with pine trees. Campers come here to fish, and enjoy the local wildlife. The campground has 16 campsites. Hours are 10 to 15 hours per week per couple. The campground is open from late May to early September.

Lower Beaver Campground is located 5 miles south of Southfork at an elevation of 8100 feet. Situated in a wooded, grassy area near Beaver Creek, campers come here to fish, hike, and use the ATV and horse trails. The campground has 20 sites. Hours are 20 to 30 per week per couple. The campground is open from late May to early September.

Upper Beaver Campground is located 6 miles from Southfork at an altitude of 8300 ft. Situated in a wooded, grassy area near Beaver Creek and Beaver Reservoir, this campground has 13 single sites and 3 group sites. Campers come here to fish and hike. Hours are 15 to 20 hours per week per couple. The campground is open from late May to early September.

Park Creek Campground is located about 8 miles south of Southfork at an elevation of 8500 feet. Situated along the Rio Grande River among cottonwoods and willows, this campground has 13 sites. Campers come here to fish, hike, and ride horses on the Lake Fork Trail 3 miles away. Caring for this facility takes between 20 to 30 hours a week. The campground is open from late May to early September.

Tucker Ponds Campground is located 15 miles south of Southfork at an elevation of 9600 feet. Set overlooking Tucker Pond, this campground has 14 campsites. Campers come here to fish, hike, hunt for mushrooms, and enjoy the beauty of the area. Water and sewer hookups are available. Hours will be from 10 to 20 a week. The campground is open from late May to early September.
