Huron Manistee National Forest

The Huron - Manistee National Forest is located in the rolling, forested hills of Michigan's lower peninsula. Split down the middle, half of the forest is located in the east, near Lake Huron. All of the parks American Land & Leisure runs are part of the other half; located on the western edge of the peninsula, on or near Lake Michigan, within a day's drive of Chicago, Detroit, and Grand Rapids. These beautiful campgrounds draw tourists to their quiet forest trails, wildflower covered meadows, and cool rivers to hike, swim and canoe. Bird watching, mountain biking, hunting, and horseback riding are also available.

American Land & Leisure runs four different facilities in the Huron Manistee Forest.

Bowman Bridge Campground is located about 5 miles west of Baldwin on the Pere Marquette River. Sportsmen get enthusiastic when you ask them about the Pere Marquette. Their eyes light up as they wax eloquent over 30 pound Steelhead and King Salmon. They’ll tell you about catching their limit of brown and rainbow trout from the river’s crystal clear waters. They’ll talk about how much they enjoy just being around the river; what beautiful country it is, how clear and clean the air is, and how the fishing is always great. And for once, they won’t be exaggerating.

The Pere Marquette, a body of water so beautiful it has been classified as a National Scenic River and a State Natural River, is the perfect place for a quiet little campground. Bowman's boasts a boat launch into the river, along with 18 single, 2 double and 4 group campsites. The North Country National Scenic Hiking Trail has a trailhead here, and guides and boats can be rented in Baldwin.

The fishing season runs year round. King Salmon run the river from mid-August to late October. Steelhead show up during September, and stay all winter long. Steelhead fishing stays good as long as May, with runs in the fall and spring. Brown and Rainbow Trout spawn and run the river from May to late August. No matter the time of year, the fishing is good at Bowman’s Bridge Campground.

To get there from Baldwin, take 7th street West 5 blocks to Cherry Street. Turn left and go 1 1/2 blocks to 52nd street (Carr RD.). Hang a right and continue on 4 miles to the campground.

Amenities available at the campground include vault toilets, pressurized water, paved roads, picnic tables, and fire rings. Firewood is sold on site.

Fees are $12 /night for a single site with up to 8 people and 2 vehicles, or $24 /night for a double site with up to 16 people and 4 vehicles. Fees for the group sites are $50 /night with up to 20 people and 5 vehicles. Extra vehicles are each charged an additional $4 /night.

Gleason's Landing Campground is a walk-in facility with 6 sites and 2 group sites along the Pere Marquette River. This quiet little campground is a great stop for hikers, canoeists, and fishermen.

To get there from Baldwin take 7th street West 5 blocks to Cherry Street. Take a left and go South 1 1/2 blocks to 52nd street (Carr Rd). Turn right and go West 2 miles to Jenks Rd. Turn left and head South 1/2 mile to Shortcut Rd. Go Southwest about 1 mile on Shortcut to 60th street. Turn left and go West 1/2 mile to Brooks Rd. Turn right and head South about 1 mile to Gleason's Landing Campground.

Amenities available at the campground include vault toilets, gravel roads, picnic tables, fire rings and drinking water. Firewood is sold on site.

Fees are $10 /night for a single site with up to 8 people and 2 vehicles. Extra vehicles are each charged an additional $4 /night.

Lake Michigan Campground is located about 18 miles from Manistee. Situated in a hardwood forest on Lake Michigan, this campground has 99 campsites and 3 group sites, many trailheads, a beach and a playground. Campers come here to fish for trout, swim, boat, hike, and just generally relax. There is no traffic noise, and the sunsets are spectacular. If there's a breeze, you can hear the waves crashing on the beach from the campground.

To get there from Manistee, take US-31 south 10 miles from its junction with M-55. Turn right on Forest Trail Road (FS Road 5629) and go 8 miles to the campground.

Amenities available at the campground include a beach, playground, paved roads, showers, flush toilets, drinking water, picnic tables, and fire rings. Firewood is sold on site.

Fees are $14 /night for a single site with up to 8 people and 2 vehicles. Group site fees are $35 /night for groups up to 25 people and $50 /night for groups up to 50 people. Extra vehicles are each charged an additional $4 /night.

Sand Lake Campground is located about a mile and a half from Dublin. Set in a mixed hardwood forest on Sand Lake, this campground has 41 single sites, two double sites, one group site, a boat ramp and sand beach. Campers come out to hike local trails, fish in the lake, swim at the beach, or just get away. This gem of a campground is close to a gas station and grocery store, but off the beaten track.

To get there from the north, turn south off M-55 at Wellston onto Seaman Road. Follow Seaman Road 4 1/2 miles through Dublin to the entrance road. Turn right on Forest Road 5728 (Sand Lake Road) to the campground. From the south, turn off M-37 about 10 miles north of its intersection with US 10 at Baldwin. Go 2 miles west on 4 Mile Road, turn north (right) on Irons Road and go about 7 miles to 10 1/2 Mile Road. Then go west 1 mile to Seaman Road. Follow north for about 3 miles to the entrance road. (Sand Lake Road).
