Elevation: 3800 feet
Pastures and wooded hillsides surround the Grindstone Campground in the Fairwood Valley. The area is popular for excellent hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and hunting. The day use area provides trail access to the top of Mt Rogers. The day use area includes a playground, cemented pond for swimming, volleyball courts, paved parking/basketball and open area for games.
A post office and bank are available in Troutdale. There is a small convenience store in the Grant community; 10 miles from the campground. The closest grocery store is in Chilhowie, 16 miles from the campground. There are gas stations and restaurants there also. There is a Walmart in Marion but the closest Super-Walmarts are in West Jefferson, 38 miles, and Bristol, VA, 42 miles. The Area Managers live in and help care for Grindstone with 4 other couples.
