Grindstone Recreation Area

George Washington & Jefferson National Forest / Mt Rogers National Recreation Area

Escape the summer heat at 3800 feet in the scenic Fairwood Valley.  Hike through a mixed forest of hardwoods, hemlocks and rhododendrons from your campsite to the top of Mount Rogers.  Grindstone is one of the best birding sites in the region.  Kids can enjoy campfire programs, splashing in the creek, playground, volleyball, and the Whispering Waters Nature Trail.

Grindstone Campground is a favorite spot for both RV and tent campers with primitive sites, water/electric sites, hot showers and a dump station.  There are 105 campsites including 37 electric sites.  46 campsites may be reserved at least 4 days in advance of your arrival and at least 6 months ahead.  Plan on an early arrival to snag a first-come-first-served campsite for the weekend.  The campground is generally open from May through October for reservations and may remain open until late November for first-come-first-served campers if the weather holds out.
